This incredible triple cd features the debut work of Norways revered Supersilent - featuring the lineup of Helge Sten (Deathprod), Ståle Storløkken (synthesizer), Arve Henriksen (trumpet), and Jarle Vespestad (drums)." Countless hours of studio recordings were trimmed down for this spectacular collection - sometimes difficult, sometimes playful and often stunningly beautiful, stretch the limits of both jazz and improvisation into another dimension. Supersilent 1-3 has been unavailable for quite some time and is now reissued in new deluxe fold-out digipak. Highly Recommended.(from boomkat)
Supersilent is the collaborative project of trumpeter Arve Henriksen, keyboard player Ståle Storløkken, drummer Jarle Vespestad and electronics man Helge Sten, better known for his Deathprod guise.

All Supersilent albums have been the result of live improvisations, the band being rumoured never to meet or even communicate in between sessions. Yet, it is in the live environment that Supersilent becomes totally alive. Here, it is possible to observe how the four members work off each other without appearing to communicate at all.

At only 33, trumpet player Arve Henriksen is already a respected figure in the world of contemporary Nordic jazz. As well as officiating in quartet Supersilent, he has been involved with the Christian Wallumrød Trio, on 1998’s No Birch, and Trygve Siem, on 2000’s Different Rivers, both released on seminal German label ECM. After studying at the Trondheim Conservatory, he has worked with John Balke’s Magnetic North Orchestra, Nils Petter Molvær, Audun Kleive or Iain Ballamy to name but a few. As well as drawing inspiration from the likes of Miles Davis, Chet Baker or Molvær, Henriksen is also very much influenced by Japanese music, especially by the shakuhatchi flute, a traditional instrument used by Buddhist monks since the thirteenth century.

Sakuteiki is Henriksen’s first solo album. Taking its name from an eleventh century Japanese treatise on garden planning, the album showcases the range of Henriksen’s artistry. Relying on very little more than a few electronic textures laid out by co-Supersilent member Helge Sten, also known as Deathprod, Henriksen draws a rich and dense sonic landscape, capturing the faintest breath of each of the instruments he plays, taking contemplative music to intense extremes. Sakuteiki was recorded in various locations, including two churches, one situated in the heart of Oslo, the other in Lommedalen, the mausoleum at the Emmanuel Vigeland Museum, also in Oslo, used for its naturally long reverb, and a loft apartment studio. All recordings were made on two tracks using two microphones, with Henriksen and Sten only using natural reverbs. Henriksen counterbalances the warmth and tonal colour of his trumpet and flute by introducing the rougher texture of an accordion (Inside Tea-House) or an organ (Procession Passing), adding an earthy edge to an otherwise airy soundscape.

Sakuteiki is everything but a conventional album. By taking his music to incredible extremes, Arve Henriksen offers a record that stands out all through. His technique, polished with his work with some of the most regarded contemporary jazz musicians, provides the most dramatic background for his compositions.

I'm sure I don't have to remind you of the impact Arve Henriksen's second album 'Chiaroscuro' had on us and, evidently, so many of you. Using a signature muted trumpet sound and his own obtuse vocal chords he assembled an album that contained some of the most unashamedly emotional musical moments we've heard, and then some. So you can imagine our excitement on hearing that the follow-up to that album was going to be a collaboration with Henriksen's Supersilent bandmate (and regular Boomkat favourite) Helge Sten, aka Deathprod. Arve Henriksen's work, rewired by the master of dark soundscapes himself? it sounds too good to be true doesn't it? Well now the album has finally rolled in after weeks of anticipation and it doesn't disappoint, drawing you in slowly and surely, with each listen brushing aside another layer of dust and giving you a closer look at the two musicians' brave and intricate vision. The album opens quietly with that muted trumpet sound we've become so accustomed to on 'Evocation', but within minutes we are launched into 'Black Mountain' which instantly shows the earth shattering potential of this heady collaboration. With a looped trumpet part rolling and shaking in the distance Sten adds a crushing distorted melody and Blade Runner-esque synthesizers to create a sublimely spooky doomscape conjuring up images of a post-apocalyptic Scandinavian retreat. At the same time pastoral and futuristic this is a daring move for Henriksen , but it pays dividends for the discerning listeners among us. The Deathprod touch is evident throughout 'Strjon' and it is a far more minimal record than I would ever have expected from Henriksen; instead of lavishing his work with layer upon layer of muted trumpet, voice and obscure instrumentation, the sounds are spaced out and left to breath, melodies are looped, faded and placed in dark caverns with no means of escape. There are moments indeed that sound as if they could have emerged from the legendary Deathprod boxset, all filtered traces of ghostly sound and expertly produced microscopic shifts, yet this is an Arve Henriksen album, and it is his horn work that is at the heart of the album. Even the title track 'Strjon', a mere two minutes of spacious, dense sound, seems to contain the spirit of Arve Henriksen's musicianship. An unexpected, diverse and daring piece of work, 'Strjon' is a rare treat, an album which demands repeat listening to reveal its shocking potential.

With Arve Henriksen's new album due at the end of the month, this classic album is finally available again. Do your homework* To get straight to the point, "Chiarsocuro" is probably the most startling and moving album I've heard this year. Arve Henriksen is a founding member of freestyle jazz experimentalists Supersilent, his inimitable trumpet playing and indescribable wordless vocalising has gained him a feverishly dedicated following, sparked off by the release of his debut album "Sakuteiki" back in 2001 and by several live performances that have left his captive audience gasping for breath. "Chiaroscuro" (taken from the Italian for "light and shade") is quite an unbeleiveable listen - cinematic in a way that words cannot describe, a vast panoramic ocean of sound reduced to the most silent, heart-wrenching string arrangements, delicate live sampling (courtesy of Jan Bang) and a whispered sweep of barely audible percussion (from Audun Kleive), hovering around Henriksen unique, mesmerising trumpet playing and broken voice. This is by far and away the most inspiring album I've heard this year, a completely wondrous listen that seems to defy categorisation or description. Sometimes you happen across a record by chance and it ends up changing your musical vocabularly forever - "Chiaroscuro" is one of those rare records. We implore all music lovers to check it out without delay. Incredible.

Arve Henriksen (b. 1968) is a Norwegian trumpet player. His distinctive flute-like sound can be heard in such bands as Supersilent, Christian Wallumrød Ensemble, Trygve Seim Ensemble, Veslefrekk, Jon Balke & Magnetic North Orchestra, and Nine Horses among others.

Arve studied at University of Trondheim, Department of Music, and has since 1989 worked as a freelance musician. He has worked with a wide selection of musicians, like Jon Balke, Anders Jormin, Edward Vesala, Jon Christensen, Marilyn Mazur , Marilyn Crispell, Nils Petter Molvær, Misha Alperin, Arkady Shilkloper, Marc Ducret, Ketil Bjørnstad and Tore Brunborg.

The unique Finnish composer and guitar master Raoul Björkenheim teams up with the hot, young Norwegian rhythm section of Ingebrigt Håker Flaten (bass) and Paal Nilssen-Love (drums) in a classic powertrio setup. Burning with an untamed energy this is neither jazz nor rock, but a free spirited music that in places reminds us of another trio, Hendrix´ criminally underrated Band Of Gypsys. Recorded live in the studio to analogue tape during two January days this year, the sound of this record is excellent with much warmth and clarity. The three of them have worked with names like Bill Laswell, Jah Wobble, Paul Schütze, Henry Kaiser, Nicky Skopelitis, Mats Gustafsson, Krakatou, Joe McPhee, Iain Ballamy, Dave Liebman, Tony Oxley, Pat Metheny, Django Bates and several others. Intense and challenging, and at times disarming with its beauty. Recommended.
